Super Eagles midfielder Mikel Agu has described Wednesday’s meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari as a ‘ double honour’, being his second time of meeting the President after last October’s visit to Turkey by Buhari.
The FC Porto of Portugal star who is on loan at Bursaspor of Turkey exclusively told completesportsnigeria.com moments before the Super Eagles boarded their chartered aircraft to London that he was excited at the honour of meeting the president for the second time even though the President did not recall their first meeting.
“It was an honour to meet Mr President because it’s not everyday you meet the president of your country. I feel privileged to be in this team and happy that we saw the President who wished us well on our way to the World Cup. He also charged us to represent Nigeria well in Russia,” Agu told Completesportsnigeria.com
Agu recalled their first meeting, saying: “When the President came to Turkey last October [for the ninth Summit of the Developin 8 D-8 nations], our club President called William Troost-Ekong and myself that he received a call from the Turkish government that our President was coming to town and that they wanted us to meet him. So we went to Istanbul and were presented to him at the Presidential Palace with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan.
“The President didn’t remember me (and Troost-Ekong) on Wednesday, but some of his aides that came with him to Turkey did and they greeted me. It was a special feeling for me.”
Agu and his Super Eagles teammates thereafter proceeded to the airport from where they flew to England for Saturday’s friendly international against the Three Lions.
