Liverpool top target, Nabil Fekir deal stalls

Liverpool's £53million move Nabil Fekir has stalled to raise doubts about whether it will be completed before the World Cup finals.

The France international, who scored 23 goals for Lyon in Ligue 1 last season, is Jurgen Klopp’s prime target for the summer and has been identified as Philippe Coutinho’s long-term replacement.

A five-year deal, worth more than £140,000 per week, has been agreed and Liverpool’s medical team travelled on Friday to Paris to conduct a medical at France national team base in Clairefontaine. It had been expected that Liverpool would be in a position to announce his signature on Friday night.

However a day of confusion began with Lyon issuing a terse statement on their website, rejecting Friday's report that Fekir on was on the brink of moving to Anfield

It read: ‘The information on the transfer of Nabil Fekir is false. Olympique Lyonnais categorically denies the false information disseminated by the media about the transfer of Nabil Fekir to Liverpool.

'In this period of transfers where the slightest rumour is often presented as a reality, Olympique Lyonnais says that only the information disseminated by the club on its website is authentic.'

There have been unsubstantiated claims that there is an issue with Fekir’s medical but Liverpool have not responded. It is very much their intention to sign Fekir, who was also wanted by Atletico Madrid and was watched by Manchester City last autumn.
