Manchester United release Carrick and eight other players

Manchester United have confirmed they will released eight players - and are awaiting a response from six others on contract offers.

The club issued their annual released and retained list via the Premier League's website and it confirms eight players will leave the club.

The first name on the list comes as no surprise. Michael Carrick has retired following a successful 12-year playing career at Old Trafford to join Jose Mourinho's coaching staff.

Carrick is the only first-team player to be named on the list with U-23 and academy players making up the rest of the names.

As anticipated, 19-year-old goalkeeper Max Johnstone has been released as has U23 defender Joe Riley, who has already agreed a deal with Bradford City.

Midfielder Devonte Redmond, who went out on loan to Scunthorpe United last season, has also been released along with teenage keeper Theo Richardson, who only joined the club last year.

Academy goalkeeper Ilias Moutha-Sebtaoui has also been released along with midfielders Jake Kenyon and Charlie Scott.

The list also confirms six United players who have been offered new contracts and are yet to sign.

The most notable player on that list is Marouane Fellaini.

The Belgium international is out of contract at the end of the month and has yet to agree terms over a new deal which has been on the table for a number of months.

Marouane Fellaini is likely to leave this summer.
Mourinho explained he wants to keep the midfielder at the club but it is looking more likely he will be playing elsewhere next season with Arsenal favourites to land the 30-year-old.

England U21 international Dean Henderson is another player who has been offered a new deal but is yet to sign. The 21-year-old has impressed on loan at Shrewsbury Town and has been linked with a permanent move to Bristol City.

Henderson could decide to snub a new deal at Old Trafford in favour of regular first-team action next season.

U23 players Indy Boonen, Zac Dearnley, Ethan Hamilton and Callum Whelan have all been offered new deals but have yet to sign.

It is also confirmed Daley Blind, Luke Shaw, Juan Mata, Ashley Young and Sam Johnstone have all had one-year extensions activated on their contracts.
