Diego Costa warned Fernando Hierro not to let Koke take a penalty against Russia, according to reports in Spain.
The striker was seen chatting to his boss and skipper Sergio Ramos before the shootout and apparently asked “Is he okay?” before Koke replied “I’m fine”.
Koke then stepped up to take a tame penalty with the third kick as Igor Akinfeev wrote himself into his country’s history books with two saves to book a quarter-final spot.
After the miss, Costa was seen gesturing towards Hierro allegedly saying “I told you” and the duo later exchanged more words on the field.
Costa, 29, plays with Koke at Atletico Madrid and may have had some insight into his 26-year-old team-mate’s mental state.
