Five-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi scored just once at the tournament and maintained his record of never having netted in a World Cup knockout game.

Wife Antonella Roccuzzo picked him up from the airport after a four-hour flight home to Barcelona.

He made his way through the airport on his own, having made the trip to Spain withJavier Mascherano, instead of the 18-hour flight to Buenos Aires made by theirArgentina teammates.

Mascherano, 34, ended a 147-cap international career after the 4-3 defeat by France.

Messi has scored 65 international goals in 128 caps

Messi snubbed reporters as he walked to meet his wife, who collected him in a Range Rover.

After 128 caps and 65 goals, Messi is thought to be strongly considering retiring from Argentina duty.

He retired briefly in 2016 after losing the Copa America Centenario final, but was persuaded to rejoin the fold a week later as Argentina chased a third World Cup triumph.

But after a stuttering group stage that saw Messi miss a penalty in a 1-1 draw with Iceland, followed by a 3-0 defeat to Croatia, his side were dumped out on Saturday thanks to two goals from 19-year-old sensation Kylian Mbappe.
