UEFA have announced that teams will be allowed to use an extra substitution in next season's Champions League knockout games - if matches go to extra time.

Premier League sides Liverpool, Tottenham, Manchester United and Manchester City have all qualified for the competiiton, after finishing in the top four during 2017-18.

And if they progress to the latter stages of the competition, they will be able to call upon an extra substitute if their second legs go past 90 minutes, reports the Liverpool Echo.

FIFA have brought in the same rule during this summer's World Cup, allowing sides to bring on another pair of fresh legs in extra time - taking the total of substitutions allowed to four.

The rule will also be in place for the UEFA Europa League, Super Cup, European Championship in 2020 and Women's competitions.
The Reds reached the final in 2018, but fell to Real Madrid
Los Blancos have won three in a row and four of the last five

A statement on UEFA's website reads:
An additional substitute will be permitted in the following UEFA competitions (a maximum of three substitutions during normal playing time will still apply)
• UEFA Champions League 2018/19
• UEFA Europa League 2018/19
• UEFA Super Cup 2018
• UEFA Women's Champions League 2018/19
• UEFA European Football Championship 2018–20
• UEFA European Women's Championship 2019–21
• UEFA Regions' Cup 2018/19

Meanwhile, UEFA have also announced that they will allow an extra substitution in the UEFA Youth League as well as youth European international football next season, taking the total of potential substitutes to five if matches go into extra time.
