Sergio Aguero scored three times as Pep Guardiola's men put the Blues to the sword at the Etihad

Manchester City chiefs apologised to Chelsea after Madness song ‘One Step Beyond’ was played at the Etihad following Sunday’s 6-0 humiliation.

Sergio Aguero scored his 11th Premier League hat-trick as Pep Guardiola’s men ran riot to move back top of the table.

And immediately after the final whistle, as City players celebrated and Maurizio Sarri made his way down the tunnel - forgetting to shake Pep Guardiola’s hand in the process - the 1979 tune was played.

However, the song also happens to be the Londoners’ victory song, played at Stamford Bridge after Chelsea wins.

As such, City officials ordered the song be cut short, worried it could be interpreted as the club gloating.

City boss Guardiola was delighted with his side's relentless display.

"The appetite is there [to retain their title]" said Guardiola. "After 100 points (last season) we have to push them.

"We don’t love each other too much, the players and the staff. We don’t let them breathe, but it’s the only way.

"Nobody can say anything bad about us, because these guys work a lot. The more you win games, the more you have to work.

"We have to maintain the level. We are competing with Tottenham and Liverpool .

"They’ve made the best starts in their history. Liverpool’s trophy room is much bigger than ours, so for us to still be there means a lot."

The two clubs meet again later this month in the League Cup final.
