Paul Merson believed Man Utd's Alexis Sanchez has lost the hunger to succeed

MANCHESTER UNITED flop Alexis Sanchez has struggled since joining from Arsenal.

Sanchez made the switch to Old Trafford last January, arriving in a swap deal that saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan move the other way.

But despite high expectations, the Chilean has struggled to adapt at his new club and has managed just five goals so far.

The appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has sparked an improvement in a number of United players but Sanchez is yet to show signs of promise under the Norwegian.

“I don't see the confidence or the hunger in his eyes any more.”

And Merson isn’t convinced Sanchez’s heart is in it anymore.

"I hope we see the old Sanchez,” he told Sky Sports.

“But I don't see the confidence or the hunger in his eyes any more.

“The first thought that used to come to mind when you mentioned Alexis Sanchez was that he worked his socks off, he put a shift in.

"For the quality he possesses as a player, he works as hard as anyone, but I don't see that anymore.

"Sanchez has lost that hunger and it's a shame. It's sad because he was good."

Charlie Nicholas was analysing Sanchez’s situation alongside Merson.

And the former Arsenal striker is frustrated by the 30-year-old, insisting he’s talented but lacks consistency.

"It pains people to watch Sanchez,” he added.

"He was a street fighter, a warrior, with talent.

“He will have an occasional burst of games but never as consistent as what he's been in the past."
