Juventus defender Andrea Barzagli has announced he will retire from football at the end of the season.

The Italian is approaching his 38th birthday and has decided to call time on a decorated 20-year career, having spent much of this season on the periphery.

Barzagli added after Saturday's defeat: 'We wanted to win today, it was a shame because we played a good game, even if we suffered during the second half.

'We would have liked to close the conversation this afternoon, but too bad.'

The defender, who has made over 280 appearances for the Old Lady, remains confident of signing off in style and adding to his seven Serie A titles to his name already.

An eighth Serie A title is in sight for Barzagli after Juve missed the chance to be crowned early champions following the shock loss against SPAL.

He confirmed after the match that he will be hanging up his boots for good come the end of the season but is unsure what his next step is at this current moment.

'Future? I've thought about it a lot,' he told Sky Sport Italia.
