Rooney Sent Off for D.C United After Smashing Forearm in Opponent's Face

Wayne Rooney was sent off in the first half of D.C United's 2-1 loss to New York Red Bulls last night with the help of VAR.

England's all-time record goalscorer was involved in a tussle with Cristian Casseres from a corner and struck the Venezuelan in the face with his forearm.

The referee went to the VAR minitor to get the best possible angle of the incident and was in no doubt that it was a red card worthy offence for violent conduct, showing the skipper a straight red card in the 24th minute.

Prior to the sending off, Rooney appeared to place his hands round the throat of 19-year old Casseres.

Red Bulls were also down to 10 men at the end of the first half when Amro Tarek was sent off for two bookings. The visitors went on to win the Atlantic Derby 2-1, with Daniel Royer's penalty condemning D.C to a second defeat in less than a week.

It hasn't been a good couple of games for Rooney, who repeatedly screamed "every f***ing time" at the fourth official in an angry rant about the standard of refereeing when he taken off in the 1-0 loss to Vancouver Whitecaps last Sunday.

The 33-year old, who only has a few Stateside games remaining before he joins Derby County on a 18-month deal as a player-coach, was also critical of travel arrangements in the MLS following the game.

Gutted about result last night. We deserved more. Looking forward to a 12 hour travel day which could be done in 6 but hey this is mls. We will get ready for red bulls Wednesday. #Charterflights #msl
