Arsenal midfielder Dani Ceballos has apologised to supporters following his penalty miss against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup.

The Spanish international came on as a substitute in the fourth-round tie at Anfield, with the Gunners twice losing a two-goal lead against Jurgen Klopp's side, eventually drawing 5-5 after a Divock Origi equaliser in stoppage time.

Ceballos was introduced with just 18 minutes remaining of the game, coming on for goalscorer Lucas Torreira after Joe Willock had put the Gunners 5-4 ahead.

After Origi's late equaliser, the match went to penalties with Hector Bellerin, Matteo Guendouzi and Gabriel Martinelli all scoring for the Gunners.

With the scores level at 3-3, Ceballos stepped up but saw his effort saved by youngster Caoimhin Kelleher. Origi put the hosts 4-3 ahead in the shootout, and despite Ainsley Maitland-Niles scoring to level things up, 18-year-old Curtis Jones put Klopp's side into the quarter finals with the final penalty.

Ceballos took to Twitter on Thursday afternoon to apologise to supporters, but also send out a defiant message and make a promise about the rest of the season.

The midfielder stated that he would "give his soul" for the team throughout the remainder of his time in north London.

Ceballos is on a one-year loan deal from Real Madrid, though there have been rumours that the 23-year-old is keen to make the move permanent at the end of the season.
