Sylvester Stallone has shared a heartfelt tribute to his Rambo co-star Brian Dennehy after  it was confirmed the actor died aged 81 this week.

Sharing an image of himself with Brian in the 1982 iconic film to Instagram on Thursday, Sly, 73, mourned the loss of a ‘great artist’.


He wrote: ‘The great actor Brian Dennehy has passed away.


‘He simply was A brilliant performer … He also was a Vietnam vet that helped me very much building the character of RAMBO.

‘The world has lost a great artist. #First Blood.’

Golden Globe winning actor Brian died on Wednesday (15 April) in Connecticut, law enforcement sources informed TMZ.

It’s said Brian died of natural causes therefore an autopsy will not be taking place.


Brian rose to prominence with his role in Rambo movie First Blood in the 80s, starring as Sheriff Teasle alongside Sylvester. But from the 70s, he had enjoyed small guest appearances in TV shows such as M*A*S*H, Kojak, Lou Grant and Dallas.

William Shatner joined Sylvester as he tweeted following Brian’s death: ‘Condolences to the family of Brian Dennehy. A wonderfully talented actor.’

Russell Crowe – who starred alongside Brian in 2010 thriller The Next Three Days – remembered the late star with his own tribute.

He tweeted: ‘Brian Dennehy has passed. He was a fine actor. He was good company.’


Brian’s daughter Elizabeth Dennehy confirmed he passed away from natural causes, and said he will be missed by many.


She tweeted: ‘It is with heavy hearts we announce that our father, Brian passed away last night from natural causes, not Covid-related. Larger than life, generous to a fault, a proud and devoted father and grandfather, he will be missed by his wife Jennifer, family and many friends. (sic)’


Over the course of 50 years, Brian went on to appear in movies such as Romeo + Juliet, Silverado, Presumed Innocent, Best Seller, The Belly of an Architect and Cocoon.


In recent years, he voiced Django in Ratatouille and appeared in hit TV series Blacklist.


Brian is survived by his wife Jennifer Arnott and five children including actress Elizabeth.
