It looks like Mikel Arteta is currently rebuilding his squad as the aging players in the team are leaving so as to give room for the youngsters to get more playing time.

It's also been gathered that Arsenal are using this January window to cut down their wage bill.

The coronavirus pandemic has affected football clubs financially and many have taken the option of reducing the pay of their staff and players.

Earlier today, Arsenal football club announced that Papastathopoulos Sokratis contract has been terminated.

The 32 years old Greek international has agreed with the club to cancel his contract by mutual consent.

According to the official statement from Arsenal, Sokratis is free to negotiate with any other club of his choice.

Arsenal's Technical director Edu said: “On behalf of Mikel, our coaches, players and everyone at the club, I would like to thank Papa for his contribution to the club.

"He has been an important part of our group and has been a model professional throughout. The negotiations to end his contract have been collaborative and we wish Papa and his family well for the future.”
Recall that Sokratis joined Arsenal from Borussia Dortmund in July 2018. He played 69 times for the Gunners, winning one  Emirates FA Cup and he played in the Europa League final in 2019.

Just so you know, Sokratis becomes the second player to leave this January window, after Mesut Ozil deal with the club was also terminated days ago.

Ozil has been reported to join Turkish side, Fenerbahce on a three years deal.
