Valencia failed to muster a single shot in the first period and Madrid's dominance was underlined when Kroos doubled their lead just before half time, with a caressed finish.
VAR ruled out a goal from Mendy, while Benzema continually threatened. Nevertheless, Madrid will be pleased with a composed three points today.
The result means that Madrid move up to second - five points behind Atletico. Valencia, meanwhile, remain in 12th.
