Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of securing European silverware have been dealt a major blow as midfielder James Maddison faces the possibility of missing the remainder of the season due to a knee injury. Manager Ange Postecoglou offered a bleak update following the club’s 1-1 draw against West Ham United on Sunday.
Speaking after the match, Postecoglou admitted the early signs weren’t encouraging: “It doesn't look great. We'll probably get more clarity tomorrow, but it's fair to say it's not looking promising.”
Maddison picked up the injury during Spurs’ 3-1 win over Bodø/Glimt in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final clash—a game in which he found the back of the net. Although he managed to leave the pitch under his own power, the post-match assessments have raised concerns of a more serious issue. According to journalist Alex Crook, the injury is significant enough that Tottenham now fear the 27-year-old may not return before the season concludes.
The timing couldn’t be worse for Spurs. Maddison has been central to the club’s resurgence this season, contributing 12 goals and 11 assists across all competitions. His creativity and composure in midfield have been key in their push for European glory and a top-four finish in the Premier League.
Already grappling with an injury to Swedish youngster Lucas Bergvall—ruled out for the season with an ankle issue—Postecoglou must now navigate a critical run-in without two of his most technically gifted players.
However, there is a glimmer of hope elsewhere. Striker Dominic Solanke, who missed the West Ham fixture with a knock, is reportedly progressing well and could return in time for the decisive second leg in Norway against Bodø/Glimt.
With the stakes rising and their squad depth about to be tested, Tottenham now face a defining moment in their campaign. Maddison's absence is a bitter setback—but one that could yet fuel a defiant response as Spurs chase their first European final in over a decade.
