Good news for Chelsea as Lingard and Martial limp off against PSG

Manchester United could be without two key men when they travel to Stamford Bridge next Monday as Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard limped off during their 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the second round of the Champion League.

Goals from Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe gave the French champions a win at Old Trafford on Tuesday night and the game could have serious implications beyond Man United’s European hopes.

First, Lingard limped off the field just before halftime, holding his hamstring as he was replaced by Alexis Sanchez.

Then as the teams emerged for the second half, Martial was nowhere to be seen Juan Mata came on in his place.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will now be left to sweat over the fitness of the pair as he prepares for Monday night’s FA Cup fifth round clash with the Blues, with both players recording three goals and two assists since the Norwegian arrived just before Christmas.

United were successful during a trip to London in the previous round of the competition as they eliminated Arsenal 3-1 at the Emirates.

But both Lingard and Martial were on the scoresheet that night and United fans will be hoping that the duo can return in time to face Chelsea in the re-match of last season’s final, which the Blues won 1-0 thanks to Eden Hazard’s 22nd-minute penalty.

Meanwhile, Chelsea will be hoping that they can emerge unscathed from their trip to Sweden to face Malmo in the last 32 of the Europa League on Thursday night.
