I apologize for marking Messi roughly - Andy Robertson reflects on Liverpool's win against Barca

Andy Robertson admits he regrets ruffling Lionel Messi’s hair during Liverpool’s unbelievable Champions League comeback at Anfield.

The Scott says he wishes he had not been so disrespectful to the Barcelona star.

Former Norwich clashed with Messi early on during that famous night in May last year, with braces from Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum securing a 4-0 win and one of the greatest ever European fightbacks of all time.

‘Me and Fabinho were tracking him [Messi] back, we both ended up on the ground,’ he told That Peter Crouch Podcast.

‘I just ruffled his hair a wee bit, he wasn’t too happy but it’s something I wouldn’t do again, that’s for sure. It’s just disrespectful to the best player that’s ever played this game.

‘That game was like, in the changing room, I’ve never seen a changing room like it. We were so pumped up for the game, and unfortunately it happened too early didn’t it?

‘He was on the ground, I was on the ground. I don’t know what came over me! I do regret it, but it’s something everyone relates to me now, which isn’t the best.

‘If I was thinking it wouldn’t have been done. I wasn’t thinking clearly.’

On the challenge of facing Messi, he continued: ‘When you test yourself against the best you want to try and come out well and he is the best player who has played in my opinion and coming up against him is tough.

‘When you come up against him you think, “OK we’re just two professional footballers” but I think he knocked it by two of our midfielders early on at the Nou Camp and he was running directly at me and I was thinking, “This guy is serious f**king hell!”

‘The stuff he does with his feet is frightening, you need to guess at times to defend against him.

‘He was at the byline once and I thought he was playing for a throw-in, no problem, but he’s dinked it inside somehow and he’s off and switched the play. No other human can do that.’
