Khelife’s father condemns attacks on his daughter, calling them immoral and a scheme to undermine her Olympic aspirations.
Khelife, the Algerian boxer who recently made headlines after her opponent, Angela Carini, quit just 46 seconds into their Olympic match, has faced significant backlash. This controversy follows her disqualification from last year's world championships in New Delhi due to gender eligibility issues.
Amar Khelife, the father of the 25-year-old boxer, has strongly denounced the attacks on his daughter, labeling them as "immoral." He believes that these criticisms are part of a deliberate "ploy" designed to hinder her chances of winning an Olympic medal. On August 2, he criticized the attacks, saying, "The attacks against her are immoral; it is not fair." He expressed his discontent with how the situation has been handled and the unfairness of the public's response.
Amar Khelife emphasized his daughter's longstanding passion for sports, recounting that Imane has been involved in athletics since the age of six and initially played football. He argued that the negative commentary and rumors are intended to destabilize her and thwart her ambition to become a world champion.
In his statement, he urged her to demonstrate her abilities in the ring, expressing his hope that she will bring pride to Algeria and the wider Arab world by winning a gold medal.
He concluded by affirming Imane’s status as a role model and expressing his family's desire to honor both Algeria and their hometown of Tiaret through her success. To substantiate his claims about her gender, Amar Khelife also presented an official document dated May 2, 1999, which verifies that Imane Khelife was indeed born female.
