Mesut Özil recently rekindled his connection with Arsenal by sharing a photograph of himself wearing the club’s iconic red and white jersey.
The post, accompanied by a sincere message, captured the attention of fans on Friday, underscoring Özil's enduring affection for Arsenal, despite his departure under challenging circumstances.
Özil’s move to Arsenal in September 2013 marked a high point for the club, as they secured one of Europe’s top midfield talents. Known for his precision and creativity on the pitch, Özil quickly became a fan favorite. Over his seven-year tenure at the club, he made 184 Premier League appearances, contributing 33 goals and 55 assists. His impressive technical abilities and vision earned him the club’s Player of the Season award in the 2015/16 campaign, during which he recorded an outstanding 19 assists in the league.
Despite his early success, Özil’s Arsenal journey took a turbulent turn under manager Mikel Arteta. Initially a key player, he gradually saw his role diminish until he was ultimately excluded from the Premier League and Europa League squads at the beginning of the 2020/21 season. The exclusion led to a public rift, with Özil openly expressing disappointment and questioning the loyalty he received from the club. Arteta later acknowledged his regret over not being able to maximize Özil’s potential, admitting, “I feel like I failed with Mesut.”
