The 20-year-old Spanish defender, who has impressed at AFC Bournemouth under manager Andoni Iraola, is poised to become a pivotal figure in Real Madrid's defensive lineup for the coming decade.
Real Madrid has agreed to pay Huijsen's release clause of €59.4 million to Bournemouth, marking the most expensive defensive acquisition in the club's history, surpassing the 2019 signing of Éder Militão. Despite receiving more lucrative offers from Premier League clubs such as Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Arsenal, as well as interest from Bayern Munich, Huijsen chose to fulfill his long-held aspiration of playing at the Santiago Bernabéu.
The transfer negotiations were facilitated by Real Madrid executives José Ángel Sánchez and Juni Calafat, with the endorsement of incoming head coach Xabi Alonso, who has already discussed the club's future plans with Huijsen. The agreement includes a five-year contract extending until 2030, starting with a gross annual salary of €9 million, potentially rising to €11 million based on performance incentives.
Huijsen's journey to Real Madrid has been years in the making. Initially scouted by the club at age 16, he opted to join Juventus, later gaining valuable experience during a loan spell at Roma and a standout season with Bournemouth. His recent debut with the Spanish national team further underscores his rapid development and readiness for this next step in his career.
Pending the successful completion of his medical assessments, Huijsen is expected to be officially unveiled as a Real Madrid player in the coming days.
