The 29-year-old Nigerian full-back was injured during the Super Eagles’ 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa in September. The setback required an operation and ruled him out of several Premier League matches as well as four Nigeria internationals.

Head coach Sean Dyche provided an encouraging update ahead of this weekend’s trip to Liverpool, confirming that Aina is now progressing well with the club’s specialists on the grass and following a similar trajectory to other players returning from long-term injuries.
The timing is particularly welcome for both club and country. Nottingham Forest are locked in a relegation battle and will benefit greatly from Aina’s pace, defensive solidity and attacking threat down the right flank. At international level, Nigeria begin their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign against Tunisia on December 23, with further group games against Uganda and Tanzania to follow.
Club sources indicate the defender could rejoin full team training within days, with a competitive return expected sometime between mid-December and early 2026, depending on how he responds to increased loads. Provided there are no setbacks, he is likely to be available for selection during the AFCON tournament.
Since arriving at the City Ground on a free transfer from Torino in 2023 and signing a contract extension until 2028 last summer, Aina has established himself as one of Forest’s most consistent performers when fit. His return will be warmly welcomed by supporters who have followed his rehabilitation closely on social media.
