Lionel Messi shocked the world when he submitted a transfer request to leave Barcelona.

Following a 2019-20 season without a silverware, the Argentine international was set for another challenge.

Manchester City were among the favourites tipped to sign the six times Ballon d'Or award winner.

But Man City's Kevin De Bruyne has stated that he does not care that Manchester City were unable to sign Lionel Messi from Barcelona this summer.

"I really don’t care. I really don’t. If he would have come it would have helped us because, for me, he has been the best player of all time," the Belgium international told The Daily Mail.

"But I am never looking at what players may come and what may happen, you know."

Although, the transfer saga came to an end after the La Liga released a statement that Messi is still contracted to club with a release clause of 700m euros.

This made the Argentine international change his decision to at Camp Nou for another season.

De Bruyne added: "You play with the players you have and I think we have a pretty good team in that respect. It would be stupid of me to assume what would happen if a certain player came. It happens in football all the time. People are supposed to come and eventually they don’t."

The Belgian international finished the season on top of the assist chart as Manchester City came second behind winners Liverpool.

He revealed that he won't mind a partnership with Messi I'm the middle of the field with the Etihad outfit.

According to Bruyne: "If you can get Messi to your team you are always going to do it. I can see it from a playing perspective and especially as a club.

"Business wise, the amount of sponsors and money it would have attracted would have been huge.

"Even if you would have paid him a load of money, in a certain way you would get it all back. So I could understand the decision in that respect."
