Southampton could've been down to 10 men just after half-time as a Walker-Peters was shown a red card for a high boot but the referee changed it to a yellow after checking the pitchside monitor. Zaha then had a second goal disallowed for a tight offside late on.
So, Palace get their Premier League season off to a winning start which will please Hodgson after they finished last season without a win in their last seven outings.
Their attention now turns to the EFL Cup though when they face Bournemouth on Tuesday.
Southampton dominated in the game, but couldn't find a way through and Hasenhuttl will expect better from them against Brentford in the EFL Cup next time out.
