Paul Merson Reveals Reason Willian And Aubameyang Are Struggling At Arsenal

Arsenal will hope to return to the Premier League action when they travel to Elland Road this weekend. Mikel Arteta side suffered another home loss against Aston Villa just before the international break.

It's a game that the north London side will be hoping to pick up three points against Marcelo Bielsa side on Sunday.

Ahead of the game, Journalist Paul Merson has been speaking about Arsenal's Willian and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

If you recall that the Brazilian international completed his move to Arsenal in the summer when he signed from Chelsea for a free transfer. Willian reportedly signed a three year contract with Arsenal.

But the play maker is yet to find his feet at the club, as he's yet to score a goal but has created three assists which all came in Arsenal's 3-0 win over Fulham on opening day game.

According to Paul Merson, who previously played for Arsenal said that Willian looks like a different player since he joined the Gunners.

The former Gunners playmaker told Sky Sports: “I think I’m seeing things at the moment.

“Willian was unbelievable at Chelsea last year. For me, he was probably one of the best Chelsea players. He was phenomenal – an outstanding talent.

“He has gone to Arsenal and he looks lost. They have got to get him performing.”

Paul Merson also spoked about the captain who is currently enduring a goal drought.

Aubameyang hasn't continued with the form he displayed last season, which saw him finish behind top scorer Jamie Vardy.

The Gabonese has only scored two goals so far in the season, and Paul Merson believes defenders have found out how to stop the former Borussia Dortmund star.

“When Aubameyang is out on the wing, he can go 15 minutes without touching the ball,” Merson added.

“You can’t have your star player going that long without touching the ball. How many goals would Jamie Vardy get for Leicester if you played him out on the left wing? Not as many as he gets now, that’s for sure."

If you recall that Aubameyang guided Arsenal to clinch the FA Cup scoring twice against Manchester City and Chelsea in the semi final and final.

He also scored in Arsenal’s Community Shield triumph against Liverpool just before the new season started.

But Merson is adamant that the former is finding it difficult due to lack of creativity in the final third.

He said:“Defences are starting to work him out. They are starting to nullify the threat from him from out wide and making life hard for him.

“They are stopping the cut inside and shot into the far corner. Something has got to change. At the moment, he’s not seeing enough of the ball where it matters.”
