The statement was released on Tuesday morning which confirmed that the striker had requested his release and the club had agreed.
It's been gathered that the following the summer arrival of Luis Suarez from Barcelona, who is now the preferred central striker alongside Joao Felix in attack.
The former Chelsea forward has taken to his social media space to pen his farewell message to the club and the fans.
He wrote on his Instagram page, @diego.costa:
"Well People... Athletics... today, sadly but at the same time happy, I come to say goodbye to all Atleti fans, all my people. Sad that I can't be more part of this family, being on the day to day, but happy to have been part of it, of this great club. I've lived through difficult times here, from which I've always gotten up thanks to the help of doctors, physicians and recoveries and my colleagues. And happy moments that are already in my memory and in everyone's. But I want to tell you that I'm happy to have been able to make history and put my little name in this great club. Something I always wanted but never imagined that could happen. I want to thank all the athletes, but I think my time has come and for both me and the club, it was the best thing that could happen. I think it's the best time for both, and the best way to help this team and the club. I've given my best, or at least, I always tried to give my best for this club and this shirt. I want to thank my colleagues, doctors, physicians and recoveries... they have been my family. I also want to thank the Technical Corps. And to the fans.... just THANK YOU. THANK YOU and THANK YOU. It was always an encouragement. Always were, and always will be, a motivation. THE GREATEST THING THIS CLUB HAS. I had a dream... I saw all the fans shouting the name of the great players who have worn this shirt, and I dreamed, and believed, and encouraged me to work for someday deserve to be shouted my name too. Now I remember moments when Calderon first, and Wanda after, have shouted my name, and I want to tell you that these are unique moments for me. Much more than titles, because affection, the human, will always be the most important thing to me. So... THANK YOU SO MUCH FANS. I don't want to say what everyone says leaving a club.
