Why I wanted to leave Bayern Munich - Lewandowski

ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI has revealed why he pushed for a transfer from Bayern Munich over the summer.

The striker, 30, has netted a staggering 156 goals for the Bundesliga giants, but claimed he did not feel protected by the club after criticism came his way last season.

Lewandowski did not score in either leg of the Champions League semi-finals as Bayern were knocked out by Real Madrid, after failing to find the net against Sevilla in the quarter-finals as well.

He handed in a transfer request via agent Pini Zahavi last season, but has explained to Bild why he did so.

The Polish international said: "In April, May, everyone shot at me.

"And I felt no protection from the club, I felt alone in the situation.

"I scored no goals in two or three important games and suddenly everybody was talking about: fire Lewandowski.

"I did not feel anyone was behind me at the time. Neither of the bosses defended me."

Lewandowski confirmed that his agent Zahavi has been looking at other options, as well as improving his relations with Bayern.

He added: "That does not mean we have to work a transfer for me.

"I'm back with Bayern with all my heart.

"I've noticed here how the fans are behind me. I realise they still want me."
