Lucas Torreira did not deserve his red card against Tottenham, claims Jermaine Jenas

The ex-Tottenham midfielder and BT Sport pundit Jermaine Jenas believes Lucas Torreira do not deserve the red card.

Arsenal midfielder Torreira was given a straight red card deep into second-half stoppage time of the 1-1 draw at Wembley.

The Uruguay international flew into a tackle on Tottenham left-back Danny Rose and caught him eye on the leg, but he did get the ball first.

Referee Anthony Taylor gave himself a few seconds to think before brandishing the red card.

Harry Kane was clearly offside when he won a penalty, which he converted to draw his team level.

Arsenal won a penalty themselves when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was taken down by Davinson Sanchez, but replays showed it may have been soft.

“I’ve been in that situation in midfield many a time where you see the ball, you slide in,” Jenas said.

“He’s gone to hook the ball, yes you can’t really legislate for the weight of your body in the direction it’s going, but there’s no way there was any malice.

“He’s not trying to hurt anybody and Danny Rose ran into him, as much as when he won the ball his contact went into Danny Rose.

“It wasn’t a red card, I actually thought Anthony Taylor didn’t have the best of games personally.

“I think they got quite a few things wrong with regards to the flow of the game as well.

“I think it was a fair result in the end, Spurs probably very fortunate to get the draw.

“But I wasn’t sure Arsenal did enough to actually win it either.”
