Former Super Eagles captain Nwankwo Kanu is the latest prominent football figure to lend his voice to the current xenophobic attacks in South Africa, with the former African footballer of the year calling for a more united Africa.
Over the last week, there has been fresh waves of xenophobic attacks targeted at other Africans especially Nigerians by South Africans, and some Super Eagles players, aside Kanu, have reacted by criticizing the incident that has seen several loss of businesses and lives.
Former Super Eagles captain Nwankwo Kanu has reacted to the current xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa.
And Kanu, two-time African footballer of the year, has now reacted. Posting a picture of former South African president Nelson Mandela on Instagram with a message that reads: “No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”
He posted the message with the caption: “AFRICA AFRICANS LOVE is ALL #onelove Let love lead! #africa #world #love #nigeria #leadership #southafrica.”

Also, some current Nigerian footballers have taken to social media to react to the ongoing xenophobic attacks on Nigerian nationals.
The recent killings gained prominence on social media, especially Twitter, with various hashtags such as #SayNoToXenophobia #XenophobicAttack and #StopXenophobia.
Among the Eagles stars who reacted are Leon Balogun and John Ogu.
While uploading a picture of the legendary former South African president Nelson Mandela and five rainbow-coloured fingers, Balogun tweeted: “Together we stand, divided we fall! I’m praying for UNITY #SayNoToXenophobia #WeAreOne.”

On his part, Ogu described the attack as totally unacceptable, urging Nigerians to pray for their countrymen in South Africa.
