Cech nearly lost his life on the pitch against Reading on this day in 2006

Cech sustained a head injury in the match against Reading on 14 October 2006 when he collided with Reading midfielder Stephen Hunt.



Chelsea lost Petr Cech after just 20 seconds. Diving to make a save at the feet of Reading's Stephen Hunt, Cech took a blow to the head that fractured his skull. He left the pitch on a stretcher and was replaced by substitute keeper Carlo Cudicini.



Cech underwent surgery for a depressed skull fracture. Initially unaware of the seriousness of the injury, the doctors later reported that it nearly cost ÄŒech his life, and as a result of the collision, he suffered intense headaches.

Chelsea announced that the goalkeeper would be out for three months, In an interview, ÄŒech said that he had no memory of the injury itself.
