He died at age 67.
His death, confirmed by is brother Randhir, comes just hours after the passing of another Indian star Irrfan Khan at age 54, dealing a double blow to the Bollywood film industry.
Rishi had been diagnosed with cancer in 2018 and had received treatment in New York last year before returning to Mumbai.
His family said in a statement: 'He remained jovial and determined to live to the fullest right through two years of treatment across two continents.'
He is survived by his wife Neetu, an actress with whom he starred in 12 films, and children Riddhima and Ranbirand.
