Speaking to John about that moment, Ben said: ‘There was a moment watching that game of Murderball with you and DJ Locksmith going at it, that I felt really uncomfortable with.
‘It felt that the control we see from you quite a lot and we’ve always seen, it’s this controlled aggression, certainly as a footballer and it had gone completely and something had flipped in you which meant you had gone so much further and you were actually choking him.’
John responded by claiming that he just got ‘carried away’.
‘I never thought it would get to that level,’ he began.
‘But football is a team game but SAS is all about individuals. You get carried away and you lose where you are, and at the moment I got carried away.’
He added: ‘I think that we had had a bit of backwards and forwards ourselves anyway, you are in a competitive mood and you’ve got to be in a competitive mood.
‘He had actually hit me with the first tackle very, very hard, he is a strong guy, and I was talking to him at the same time and I suppose that’s what we were supposed not to do.
‘At the end of the day we were supposed to keep our own self-control, and I’ll be honest that time we lost it.’
