Marcos Alonso's extra-time winner finally saw Chelsea past League One Plymouth but their 2-1 FA Cup win owed plenty to a last-gasp penalty miss from Argyle's Ryan Hardie.
Chelsea also needed extra time and late drama to see off lower league opposition 2-1 to reach the last 16.
Macaulay Gillesphey gave the League One side into the lead after just eight minutes.
But Chelsea equalised after Cesar Azpilicueta’s inventive finish levelled just before half-time.
The Blues who were without their manager Thomas Tuchel due to positive Covid-19 result made it 2-1 during the first half of extra time when Marcos Alonso slotted home Kai Havertz’s cross.
However, the drama did not end there as Plymouth were awarded a penalty with seconds to go in extra time. But Kepa Arrizabalaga ensured there was not a shootout when he saved Ryan Hardie’s spot-kick.
