Prior to Roma's journey to Budapest, Mourinho had a spotless record in European finals. However, he witnessed his team lose 4-1 on penalties to Sevilla, giving the Spanish team its seventh Europa League championship in as little as 17 years.
Paulo Dybala gave Mourinho's team the lead just after the end of an hour, however Gianluca Mancini's own goal within the the 55th minute tied the game and made it a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation.
After extra time, the game reportedly proceeded to penalties, where Sevilla finally prevailed in the shootout.
Mourinho quickly made his way down the tunnel after tossing his runners-up medal into the crowd in the direction of a Roma supporter.
Since Mourinho has drawn attention from a number of European teams as well as organizations in Saudi Arabia, much of this season has been spent speculating about the Portuguese manager's future at Roma.
