The toll included individuals from diverse backgrounds, highlighting the impact of the emotionally charged game.
If you recall that the Super Eagles of Nigeria secured their spot in the final of the AFCON 2023 tournament after prevailing in a tense 4-2 penalty shootout win over South Africa.
Among the unfortunate casualties were Cairo Ojougboh, a former member of the House of Representatives; High Chief Osondu Nwoye, an Igbo businessman residing in Ivory Coast; Ayuba Abdullahi, the deputy bursar of Kwara State University (KWASU) in Malete, Kwara; and Mikail Osundiji, a 43-year-old resident of Ogun. Each lost their lives in different locations across Nigeria during the gripping match.
The Super Eagles express heartfelt condolences to the families and communities affected by this tragic event. As they celebrate their advancement to the AFCON final, the team recognizes the somber reality of the lives lost in the pursuit of football glory.
Nigeria will now face host nation Côte D'Ivoire in the final on Sunday.
It could be recalled that Nigeria defeated Côte D'Ivoire 2-0 in the group stage of the competition.
