Nigeria Secures 2023 AFCON Final Berth with Penalty Shootout Victory Over South Africa
The Super Eagles of Nigeria clinched a spot in the final of the 2023 African Cup of Nations after a thrilling semi-final encounter against South Africa. In a tense match that went into a penalty shootout, Nigeria emerged victorious with a 4-2 win.
The game began with both teams failing to break the deadlock in the first half despite several scoring opportunities. However, Nigeria seized the initiative in the 67th minute when Williams Troost Ekong converted a penalty after Victor Osimhen was fouled in the box.
Shortly after, Victor Osimhen appeared to have doubled Nigeria's lead with a tap-in from a cross by Osayi, only for the goal to be disallowed and a penalty awarded to South Africa. The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervened, identifying a foul by Al Hassan on Peacy Tau in the buildup, leading to Mokoena scoring the equalizer in the 90th minute.
Nigeria gained a numerical advantage when Kekana was sent off for fouling Moffi on the edge of the box following a VAR review. Despite the 120 minutes ending in a stalemate, Nigeria maintained composure during the penalty shootout.
Kelechi Iheanacho, who entered the game during extra time, secured Nigeria's victory by converting the fourth penalty. Although Ola Aina missed his penalty, Stanley Nwabali's heroics in goal, saving two of South Africa's penalties, ensured Nigeria's passage to the final of the tournament.
