John Owan Enoh, the Minister of Sports Development, has addressed the controversy surrounding Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili’s exclusion from the women’s 100m event at the Olympics.
Ofili had recently claimed that the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), and the National Anti-Doping Committee (NADC) failed to register her for the event, leading to her omission.
In his statement on Wednesday, Minister Enoh condemned the negligence that led to Ofili’s exclusion and pledged a thorough investigation into the incident. Enoh detailed that he had previously interacted with Ofili and addressed her concerns during the African Championships in Douala. Following her recent distress, Enoh contacted the AFN, which confirmed that Ofili was registered for the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay events. The AFN’s Secretary General also confirmed that Ofili was listed for the 100m on the final list submitted to the NOC.
Minister Enoh emphasized that such negligence is unacceptable and vowed that sanctions would follow a complete investigation. He called for all parties involved to uphold their responsibilities with seriousness, ensuring that Ofili's opportunity to compete is not compromised.
