
Health and food safety officials in Singapore are investigating the case, which led to 60 people displaying symptoms of gastroenteritis on Tuesday. Of these, 57 required hospital treatment.
ByteDance has announced that it is examining the cause of the illness among its employees. A spokesperson for ByteDance stated, "We take the health and safety of our employees very seriously and have taken immediate steps to support all affected employees, including working with emergency services to provide care." The spokesperson also noted, "We are investigating the matter and are working with the relevant authorities on this."
According to local news outlet Lianhe Zaobao, the Singapore Civil Defence Force dispatched 15 ambulances to the scene, with fire engines also on standby. The report indicated that a Chinese buffet was served at ByteDance’s canteen in Singapore’s business district on Tuesday afternoon.
The BBC reported that ByteDance's food is prepared by third-party caterers. The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) and the Ministry of Health issued a joint statement emphasizing that "Food operators must play their part by adhering to good food safety practices" and warned that "SFA will not hesitate to take enforcement action against errant food operators.”
