Mikel Arteta clarified the situation surrounding Riccardo Calafiori’s absence during Arsenal’s friendly match against Liverpool on their pre-season tour in the USA.
Although Calafiori joined the team earlier in the week, he was not involved in the game, which Arsenal lost 2-1.
Calafiori recently transferred to Arsenal from Bologna during the summer transfer window. Arteta explained the decision to manage Calafiori's involvement carefully: “We had to manage him. He had a very busy 48 hours before he took his flight & joined us here & then it was the jetlag, it’s a lot of things.”
Arteta emphasized that Calafiori has not yet trained with the team: “He hasn’t trained with the team yet & we want to build him up slowly to get to know him first. We’ll have plenty of time to see him.” This approach aims to ensure that Calafiori is fully integrated and ready for future matches.
