
It was learnt that the 51-year-old had traveled to Bergamo to support Liverpool in their Champions League match against AC Milan. The accident occurred early Tuesday morning, and Merseyside Police have confirmed his death.
Meanwhile Liverpool Football Club expressed profound sorrow over the incident. In an official statement, the club said, "We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of our supporter Philip Dooley, following a road traffic accident in Bergamo. The thoughts and prayers of everyone connected to the club are with Philip’s family, friends, and fellow supporters at this extremely difficult time." The club also mentioned that their staff in Milan are working with local police and the consulate to support other fans affected by this devastating incident.
Despite the somber news, Liverpool secured a 3-1 victory over AC Milan in their Champions League opener. Christian Pulisic gave AC Milan an early lead with a goal in the third minute. However, Liverpool responded strongly with goals from Ibrahima Konate in the 23rd minute, Virgil van Dijk in the 41st minute, and Dominik Szoboszlai in the 67th minute. This win marked a positive start for Liverpool in the group stage of the competition.
The club's players wore black armbands during the match to honor Philip Dooley, and flowers were placed on his seat at the San Siro stadium as a tribute. The entire Liverpool community mourns the loss of a dedicated supporter and extends their heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
