Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, has taken to X (formerly Twitter) to encourage Nigerians to consider growing their own food as a means to reduce food costs.
Onanuga shared photos of potatoes he recently harvested from his garden in Lekki-Ajah, Lagos, and urged citizens to take small actions to help alleviate the current food crisis.
In his post, he wrote: "I harvested some potatoes today in the garden beside my house in Lekki-Ajah. Grow some food; your little effort can help reduce food costs. Do something, not just tweet criticism of the government."
This advice comes amid rising inflation and food prices in Nigeria, with many people struggling due to economic pressures. Onanuga's message emphasizes personal responsibility and practical steps that individuals can take, even in small ways, to contribute to solving larger issues like food insecurity.
His call for citizens to engage in food production mirrors similar initiatives by government figures, including the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, who has also advocated for home gardening as a strategy to combat food price inflation.
While some have supported Onanuga’s advice, seeing it as a practical solution, others view it as insufficient in addressing the root causes of the country's food crisis.
