Li, 64, had served as the secretary of the Communist Party's working committee for the Hohhot Economic and Technological Development Zone.

He was found guilty of embezzling more than 3 billion yuan (around $421 million), making this the largest financial corruption scandal in the country’s history.

The Supreme People’s Court upheld Li’s death sentence, which was originally issued in September 2022 and confirmed on appeal in August 2024. His execution was carried out in Inner Mongolia.

This case is part of President Xi Jinping's broader anti-corruption campaign, which has been targeting corruption within the Communist Party and government since 2012. The initiative has led to the prosecution of numerous officials, including high-ranking military leaders. Despite these efforts, investigations into senior officials, known as "tigers," continue to increase, with 54 such cases already recorded this year.
