Gareth Southgate, the former England men's football team manager, has been recognized with a knighthood in the King’s New Year Honours List for 2025. This accolade celebrates his remarkable contributions to English football during his tenure as manager.
Southgate, who stepped down earlier this year following the UEFA Euro 2024 Final, led England to significant milestones, including back-to-back European Championship finals and a World Cup semi-final. Over nearly eight years at the helm, he managed 102 games, securing 61 victories, 24 draws, and 17 defeats.
In 2019, he was honored with an OBE for his services to football, and this knighthood further highlights his influence both on and off the field. Southgate is credited with fostering a strong team ethos, enhancing the relationship between players and fans, and elevating the national team’s profile on the global stage.
Debbie Hewitt, Chair of the Football Association, extended her congratulations, describing the knighthood as a well-deserved honor for a career dedicated to football as a player, coach, and leader of change within the sport.
This prestigious recognition cements Southgate’s legacy as one of the most influential figures in English football history.
