
Bugayev, who played as a defender, was a member of the Russian national team during the 2004 European Championship and earned seven international caps during his career. At the club level, he represented various teams, including Torpedo Moscow, Lokomotiv Moscow, Tom Tomsk, Khimki, and Krasnodar, before retiring from professional football in 2010.
Earlier in 2024, Bugayev was convicted of drug trafficking and sentenced to nine and a half years in prison. To avoid serving this sentence, he reportedly joined the Russian military and was deployed to Ukraine. His death was confirmed by his father, Ivan Bugayev, who expressed the family's grief and acknowledged the challenges in recovering his son’s remains due to the ongoing hostilities.
