17-Year-Old Diego León Set to Join Manchester United in 2025.
Manchester United have reached a verbal agreement to acquire 17-year-old Paraguayan left-back Diego León from Cerro Porteño.
The negotiations, led by United's technical director Jason Wilcox, have been ongoing for approximately six months, addressing various contractual details. The proposed deal includes a fixed payment of $4 million, with an additional $4 million in performance-related variables, and grants Cerro Porteño a percentage of any future transfer fee.
León made his debut for Cerro Porteño in August, scoring a goal against Sportivo Ameliano, and has since accumulated two goals in 19 appearances during the Clausura season. His performances have attracted interest from clubs in Spain, Italy, and England, highlighting his status as one of South America's most promising talents.
Due to Football Association and Premier League regulations prohibiting the transfer of players under 18 from abroad, León will remain with Cerro Porteño until he turns 18 in April 2025. He is expected to join Manchester United in June 2025, upon reaching the age of majority.
This acquisition aligns with Manchester United's strategy of investing in emerging talent and marks the first signing under new manager Ruben Amorim. The club aims to bolster its defensive options, especially considering recent injury challenges among current left-backs.
