The decision comes after a challenging period marked by poor results, with the team struggling near the bottom of the EFL Championship table. Despite joining the club in May 2024, Rooney's tenure saw only four wins from 23 matches, and the team conceded 51 goals during that time.

Rooney's departure was amicable, with the club and the manager mutually agreeing on the decision. His coaching staff, including Assistant Head Coach Mike Phelan and First Team Coach Simon Ireland, will also leave their roles. As an interim solution, First-Team Coach Kevin Nancekivell and Captain Joe Edwards will take charge of the team for the upcoming match against Bristol City.

In his exit statement, Rooney expressed his gratitude to the club’s board, staff, players, and fans. He also wished the team success moving forward. This marks the end of his managerial career at Plymouth, which follows a stint at D.C. United in Major League Soccer, where he parted ways with the club in October 2023 after failing to reach the playoffs for two consecutive seasons.
