Didier Deschamps to Step Down as France Head Coach After 2026 World Cup

Didier Deschamps, the head coach of the French national football team, has officially announced his intention to step down following the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In an interview with broadcaster TF1, Deschamps stated, "In 2026 it will be over. In my head it's very clear. I've done my time, with the same desire and passion to maintain France at the highest level but 2026 is a very good time to stop."

Appointed in 2012, Deschamps has led Les Bleus through a remarkable era, securing the 2018 World Cup title and the 2021 Nations League trophy, and reaching the finals of both Euro 2016 and the 2022 World Cup. Under his guidance, France has consistently performed at the pinnacle of international football.

Deschamps emphasized the importance of knowing when to conclude his tenure, stating, "One has to be able to say stop, there's a life after this. The most important thing is for France to stay at the top as they have been for many years."

As the French Football Federation (FFF) begins the search for his successor, former French international and Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane is widely regarded as a leading candidate. However, FFF President Philippe Diallo noted that it is premature to discuss a replacement at this stage, expressing respect for Deschamps' current tenure.
