Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger is facing a significant setback following recent events. He has undergone successful surgery to repair a partial tear in the external meniscus of his left knee.
This injury had been troubling him for over seven months, causing severe pain. As a result, he is expected to be sidelined for approximately six to eight weeks, effectively ruling him out for the remainder of the La Liga season and casting doubt on his participation in the upcoming Club World Cup and Nations League tournaments.
In addition to his injury, Rüdiger is under scrutiny for his conduct during the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona. After being substituted, he was involved in a controversial incident where he reportedly threw an object, believed to be an ice cube, at referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea. This act led to a straight red card, and he had to be restrained by teammates and coaching staff.
The Spanish Football Federation's disciplinary committee is reviewing the incident, and Rüdiger could face a suspension ranging from four to twelve matches. If the act is deemed an assault, the ban could extend up to six months. Rüdiger has publicly apologized for his behavior, acknowledging that there is "no excuse" for his actions.
Given the timing of his injury and the potential suspension, Rüdiger is set to miss the remainder of the current season, including crucial fixtures such as the upcoming El Clásico on May 11. His absence will be a significant blow to Real Madrid as they continue their campaign.
