The Premier League later supported the decision not to send off Tyler Adams during the match between Bournemouth and Manchester United on April 27, 2025. Despite Adams launching into a two-footed tackle with both feet off the ground on Alejandro Garnacho, referee Peter Bankes issued only a yellow card. The decision was reviewed and upheld by VAR, which deemed the challenge reckless but not serious foul play, and therefore did not warrant a red card.

The Premier League’s official Match Centre account on X (formerly Twitter) affirmed that the on-field call was correct. However, this decision led to widespread outrage among Manchester United fans on social media, with many believing the tackle deserved a red card. Comparisons were also made to previous incidents where similar challenges had resulted in players being dismissed.

Adding to the controversy, Manchester United had two penalty claims involving Harry Maguire denied, both of which were not reviewed by VAR during the match. In contrast, Bournemouth’s Evanilson was sent off later in the game for a challenge on Noussair Mazraoui after VAR intervention. The match ultimately ended in a 1-1 draw, with Rasmus Højlund scoring a stoppage-time equalizer for United.

The Premier League’s decision to categorize Adams' tackle as reckless rather than serious foul play was based on the officials’ assessment that, while dangerous, it did not meet the threshold for a red card under current officiating guidelines.
