Following Leicester's relegation from the Premier League after a 1–0 home defeat to Liverpool, the Dutch manager's tenure has come under scrutiny. Appointed in November 2024, van Nistelrooy's time in charge has been challenging, with the team securing only one win in 18 matches under his leadership. The club's performance, including a record nine consecutive home games without scoring, has raised concerns about the team's direction and management.

Van Nistelrooy has expressed disappointment over the club's lack of investment during the January transfer window, with the only signing being Woyo Coulibaly and the departure of striker Tom Cannon to balance finances. Additionally, the team's over-reliance on aging star Jamie Vardy, who struggled to deliver, and a porous defense conceding 73 goals in 33 games contributed significantly to their downfall. Despite these challenges, van Nistelrooy stated he had no regrets taking the job but hoped to have contributed more positively.

Leicester City is now seeking a new manager, with top candidates including former England U21 coach Lee Carsley, Southampton’s ex-manager Russell Martin, Sheffield Wednesday’s Danny Röhl, and former Arsenal legend Cesc Fabregas, who is currently coaching Italian club Como. Formal discussions about the managerial change are expected soon.
