Nigerian chess master and founder of Chess in Slums Africa, Tunde Onakoya, has achieved a historic milestone by breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon. Alongside his chess partner, Shawn Martinez, Onakoya surpassed the previous record of 61 hours, 3 minutes, and 34 seconds, reaching an impressive 62 hours of continuous gameplay.
The marathon, held at Times Square in New York City, began on April 17 and is set to conclude later today, April 20. Onakoya and Martinez are now aiming for an ambitious 70-hour milestone, demonstrating remarkable endurance and dedication.

This achievement is not just about setting a new record; it carries a deeper purpose. Onakoya has used this platform to raise awareness and funds for building Nigeria's largest free school for homeless children. Through his initiative, Chess in Slums Africa, he continues to inspire and empower vulnerable children, proving that dreams can be realized regardless of circumstances.

In a heartfelt message shared during the marathon, Onakoya emphasized the significance of the event: "Every move, every hour, is a love letter to children who’ve never known the luxury of a second chance. If your heart has ever burned for something bigger than yourself, come find us. Stand with us."

This marks Onakoya's second attempt at the prestigious record. In April 2024, he completed a 60-hour chess marathon, surpassing the previous record of 56 hours set in 2018. However, his achievement was short-lived as another pair of Norwegian players extended the record to 61 hours later that year. Now, Onakoya and Martinez have reclaimed the title, pushing the boundaries of endurance and determination.

The chess marathon has garnered global attention, with supporters from various parts of the world celebrating this extraordinary feat. Proceeds from the event, including sales of limited edition chess sets, will go directly towards the construction of the tuition-free school for homeless children.
